“I want to say many thanks to everyone at Young and Talented Cornwall”, says golfer Sam Church, 16, from Saltash. An award from the Fund has enabled Sam to buy a rangefinder that takes the guesswork out of measuring distances on a golf course. “The rangefinder has really helped get the exact yardage from my swing to the flag,” says Sam.
In just four years of playing golf, Sam has won the Cornwall Under 14 Championships, come second in the Under 16 Championships and earlier this year won the Under 18 Junior European Championships inAndalusia.
Roger Reynolds, Advanced Skills PE Teacher at Saltash Community School says: “It was a fantastic achievement winning the Andalusia open against some of the best young golfers in Europe. Sam has progressed from being a keen and talented all-round sportsman into a dedicated, focussed and highly motivated young golfer.”
Sam is currently working hard in the gym – putting in 4 or 5 sessions a week to develop his strength and flexibility. He hopes to enter bigger competitions next year and his long term goal is to become a professional.
